It is time to commit ourselves with the
English language, because within
science and engineering is a must.
A short remembering on our short history. In 1991, just
when Universidad Iberoamericana de Ciencias y
Tecnología started operations, we agree with
University of Tennessee on building
academic collaboration, starting from knowing each other institutions,
allowing visiting academic programs for UTK faculties, as well as for
some of our faculties.
One of the most relevant activity was a UTK Headquarter
visit in 1998 of the Chancellor Dr. William T.
Snyder and four the Deans; Dean of
the Graduate School, Dr. C. W. Minkel, Dean of Engineering, Dr. Jerry
Stonecking, Dean of Veterinary Medicine Dr. Michael Shires and the
Associate Dean of Agriculture Dr. G. Schneider. The name
Tennessee was given at that time to the
main building of the University.
Many activities had happened since then. This section,
within our web site, has the objective of opening a communication
environment to challenger our students into the English as we did it
five years ago when we introduced the English language over 8 semesters
in the curricula.
Let us describe the most two near relevant events that
has occurred within the relations with University of Tennessee:
● First, during August 2009,
Dr. Mongi A. Abidi, Director of “Imaging, Robot and Intelligent Systems”
Laboratory, visited us for a week and teaches a curse:
-
“Robotic and Artificial
Intelligence” and deliver two conferences
-
“3-D
Image Processing” and
-
“Robot
Vision and Sensing” .
The students had the opportunity to chat with
Dr. Abidi with an “empanada”
and refreshments.
An important agreement of collaboration has established
with Dr. Abidi, of course the results will
depend on the students English proficiency, so the challenger is “your
commitment” to learn English.
To start with, let me introduce you to the document
“Basics Agreement of Collaboration”. To
be easier for your understanding, this only time, we provided with the
written translation as well.

The Dean of the College of Engineering Dr. Raúl Smith and Dr. Mongi
Abidi, of IRIS,
discussed basics development for the
Engineering College within Electronic, Robotics,
Automation, and Imaging.
Dr.
Mongi Abidi has agreed to provide support in the following areas.
First priority:
a.
Review of the
Civil Electronic Engineering Curriculum for
accreditation.
b.
Review of the educational
methodologies in order to introduce teaching or research enhancements
through thesis projects during the last year of the program.
c. Organize
the teaching of special topics courses in English
by engineering faculty, within the last year program of
Civil Electronic Engineering and Civil Computer
Engineering.
Second priority:
d.
Assist undergraduate
students by providing information on the requirements of coursework,
English tests, and technical tests required
to apply for graduate programs.
e.
Assist students with
adequate English proficiency to secure
training or learning opportunities that can be accepted as requirement
for graduation at Universidad Iberoamericana de
Ciencias y Tecnología .
f.
Assist students who have
completed the six-year program in Civil Electronic
Engineer to apply to Ph.D. Programs .
g.
Assist in the development
of joint research programs involving students and faculty at
Universidad Iberoamericana de Ciencias y
Tecnología.

año del programa.
c.

●Second,
during August, Dr. Michael Davidson, Director of Food
Science and Technology Department of the University of Tennessee and Dr.
Federico M. Harte, Assistance Professor of Protein Polymer, visited us
for a week and teaches three curses in:
-
Listeria
Monocytogenes; Characterization and Control.
-
Reology
of Fermented Dairy Products
-
Methods
for identifying, analyzing and applying natural microbials to foods
The students had the opportunity to chat
with both faculties eating an
“empanada” and refreshments.
An important agreement of collaboration has established
with Dr. Davidson, of course the results
will depend on the students English proficiency,
so the challenger again, is “your commitment”
to learn English.
Let me introduce the document
“Basics Agreement of Collaboration” in
English and in Spanish as well.

We encourage you all engineering
students, to write short news or comments or your academic experiences
related with the English language, within de English courses, or within
your attendance to English seminars, conferences or courses.
We claim that this
“Engineering
News” section, in the Web Engineering Site, will introduce
yourselves to interact , little by little in the language, don’t be
afraid in making mistakes, be afraid in doing nothing.
